Rising Food Prices Propelling Inflation Worldwide

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

Popular financial newsletter Profit Confidential reports that global food prices jumped 1.9% in January around the globe, the biggest monthly gain in 11 months. According to Michael Lombardi, lead contributor to Profit Confidential, things are going to get worse.

“At a time when economic growth worldwide is slowing, citizens around the world are hampered in their spending because their personal budgets are being ‘eaten’ away by higher food prices,” says Lombardi.

While in the U.S., food costs account for less disposable income than in developing countries, Lombardi points out that low-income earners here in the U.S. don’t have that luxury: “Their food costs, as a percentage of income, are comparable to developing countries.”

Chinese inflation rose 4.5% in January, which Lombardi highlights as much higher than expected: “The main culprit for the rise of inflation was food inflation, which surged 10.5% year-over-year.”

Lombardi outlines what happens if the Federal Reserve embarks on QE3 to spur economic growth: “This will result in a fall in the value of the U.S. dollar against other world currencies, which will cause all commodities, including oil and food prices, to rise, because they are priced in U.S. dollars.”

The government has increased its debt by approximately $ 5.0 trillion in four years, which worries Lombardi, “No country can issue so much debt and create so much new money without creating inflation. History has proven this.”

This is the reason Lombardi has called for higher gold bullion prices, which have risen 470%.

“As the economy slows further in 2012, as the Fed unleashes QE3 to deal with the softening economy, gold prices again rise with inflation,” says Lombardi.

Profit Confidential, which has been published for over a decade now, has been widely recognized as predicting five major economic events over the past 10 years. In 2002, Profit Confidential started advising its readers to buy gold-related investments when gold traded under $ 300 an ounce. In 2006, it “begged” its readers to get out of the housing market… before it plunged.

Profit Confidential was among the first (back in late 2006) to predict that the U.S. economy would be in a recession by late 2007. The daily e-letter correctly predicted the crash in the stock market of 2008 and early 2009. And Profit Confidential turned bullish on stocks in March of 2009 and rode the bear market rally from a Dow Jones Industrial Average of 6,440 on March 9, 2009, to 12,876 on May 2, 2011, a gain of 99%.

Jensen Beach, FL (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

In keeping with MWR’s commitment to meet the ever-changing needs of men’s wedding ring buyers; the retailer is pleased to offer a wide range of designer men’s palladium wedding rings for their customers. Shoppers have come to expect the greatest variety of metals from their online store, which includes several other designer collections from Benchmark. Benchmark was the first major designer to introduce men’s designer palladium rings to the marketplace, and because they look so much like platinum, they were very well received. Palladium also gives MWR’s customers another fantastic alternative to pricier precious metals.

Adding to their premium designer collections in gold, diamond, platinum, Argentium silver and seranite, MWR is among the first to offer a selection of designer men’s palladium wedding rings. As gold prices rise and jewelry buyers become more practical with their selections, palladium is expected to be a popular choice for grooms-to-be again this year. Mens-Wedding-Rings.com has earned a reputation for offering shoppers the best selection of traditional and alternative wedding rings in styles to match every man’s personal style. Designer men’s palladium rings were among the first collections featuring an “contemporary” metal in wedding jewelry, and yet this retailer has found that very few people know about palladium and what makes it so different from the rest.

Less than two years since the launch of their store, Mens-Wedding-Rings.com has become known as one of the best retail marketers in the wedding ring industry. A major contributor to this early success has been their dedication to providing an unparalleled resource for online shoppers in search of men’s wedding rings. When shoppers enter the site, they find an endless selection of men’s rings in gold, silver, platinum, tungsten, titanium, cobalt and palladium, plus recently added designer collections of diamond, seranite and Argentium silver rings. While the popularity of some contemporary metals may rise and fall, MWR’s customers have shown consistent interest in designer men’s palladium wedding rings.

Despite their longstanding reputation among wedding ring buyers, palladium rings have not been as widely promoted as industrial metals like tungsten and titanium. They are a little more expensive than some of the edgier industrial metals, however, and many jewelers regard palladium as a precious metal since it is mined right alongside platinum. This may explain the difficulty with putting palladium rings in a category. Historically, palladium was too hard to be melted into jewelry molds, so it was used as a “strategic metal” by the military. Initially, because of its strength, palladium was the metal jewelers used for setting diamonds.

The alloy used in designer men’s palladium wedding rings contains 95 percent palladium and 5 percent ruthenium, resulting in a very brilliant and sturdy metal that is even purer than white gold. Some important factors that set designer men’s palladium rings apart include their weight, brilliance and competitive price. Also, palladium is neither too light nor too heavy on the hand, and it has a brightness that is comparable to platinum. For men who have an allergic reaction to white gold, these men’s rings are a hypoallergenic alternative. Its natural strength allows palladium to absorb sharp blows without scratching and it won’t wear away like some softer metals will.

For men who prefer a precious metal for a wedding ring but don’t want to spend too much, designer men’s palladium rings are the perfect solution. It is just as rare and pure as platinum, but it costs significantly less because of lower demand in the marketplace. Palladium is currently selling at about one-fifth the price of platinum, but the price could go up as demand increases. This makes the selection of a palladium wedding ring a wise investment. MWR is pleased to offer a fabulous selection of designer men’s palladium wedding rings to match their customers’ individual style.

Marlborough, Mass. (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

Award-winning healthcare provider OhioHealth of Columbus, Ohio, has selected Unidesk® as the management foundation for its 1,000-user Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). By replacing physical PCs with hosted virtual desktops that can be accessed anytime from any device, OhioHealth aims to make its core applications more accessible, even by physicians who are constantly on the move. The increased automation will improve the quality of patient care, and the movement of desktops from the edge to the data center will improve security and patient privacy. Unidesk’s role is to simplify application packaging and delivery, streamline desktop provisioning and patching, minimize storage use, and provide the “follow me”’ desktop experience that is essential for success.

OhioHealth joins a growing roster of healthcare organizations turning to Unidesk-managed VDI for physician-friendly application access and more efficient desktop provisioning. Other Unidesk customers that mark the layering leader’s expansion into the healthcare market include Cardiovascular Associates of Virginia, Lowell General Hospital, Morehead Memorial Hospital, Mount Graham Regional Medical Center, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, and U.S. Indian Health Service at Crownpoint Health Care Facility.

“The key to standard, high-quality healthcare is to get physicians to make more consistent use of computer systems, so we want our desktops to better suit their mobile work requirements,” said Scott Walker, Director of Technology Services at OhioHealth. “We’re known for being a progressive, wired healthcare organization, making VDI a natural way to address this. Our new virtual desktops will follow clinicians wherever they go, and enable them to immediately pick up where they left off, whether they’re accessing their desktops from a device outside a patient room, their office PC, a thin client in one of our floater offices, or even when away from the office. Unidesk is the management solution that will make VDI work for all of our employees and more importantly for our IS organization.”

Unidesk desktop layering software has become the easiest way to provision and manage applications and desktops in VDI, a critical requirement in healthcare where many applications are not easily virtualized, and desktops are configured with different applications and settings. Unidesk will enable OhioHealth to centrally package its large portfolio of clinical applications at a rate many IT administrators estimate is at least 10 times faster than using traditional application virtualization tools.

Commented Walker, “It’s just not possible to virtualize every app. We started down that path early in our VDI project, but the ROI became a challenge when it took days to package some of the more complex, legacy applications. One of the things we love about Unidesk is that the process of packaging an app is as close to a physical PC as you can get, which enables us to leverage our existing skillsets.”

Unidesk layering technology extends beyond applications to operating system (OS) gold images and user personalization as well, enabling administrators to create custom desktops that meet any end user’s needs with one solution. Because the same OS layer and application layers can be shared by some or all desktops, Unidesk reduces VDI storage capacity requirements up to 70% and simplifies patch management and application updates.

“Beyond helping us realize the mobility and security benefits of VDI, Unidesk will address our other big pain point, which is how to make the provisioning and management of our apps and desktops better,” said Walker. “Backing out a Windows hot fix on one physical PC is hard, never mind a thousand. But with Unidesk, we can just revert back to an earlier OS layer version at the click of a button. This alone sells the VDI model.”

Serving a 40-county area, OhioHealth is a family of 21,000 associates, physicians and volunteers; 18 hospitals; 23 health and surgery centers; and numerous home-health, medical equipment, and health service providers. The nationally recognized, not-for-profit healthcare organization has been named to FORTUNE magazine’s 2012 list of the nation’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for six consecutive years and by Thomson Reuters as one of the 10 best healthcare systems in America for three straight years. Member hospitals include Riverside Methodist Hospital, Grant Medical Center, Doctors Hospital-Columbus, Grady Memorial Hospital, Dublin Methodist Hospital, Doctors Hospital-Nelsonville, Hardin Memorial Hospital and Marion General Hospital.

OhioHealth is working with Unidesk partner Mainline Information Systems as it implements its virtual desktops using Unidesk and VMware View.

“Unidesk-managed virtual desktops are a great option for healthcare organizations like OhioHealth that are looking to improve the quality of patient care, comply with HIPAA and meaningful use legislation, and streamline IT operations,” said Don Bulens, Unidesk CEO. “We look forward to helping OhioHealth make VDI successful so they can spend less time running around patching, updating, and troubleshooting desktops, and more time implementing technology that helps provide better healthcare to the OhioHealth community.”

Austin, TX (PRWEB) February 09, 2012

After receiving several leading spirits awards late in 2011, the makers of Austin-based Wahaka Mezcal are proud to announce that their line of organic mezcales are now available in the United States.

Using traditional distilling processes with more than 400 years of history behind them, Wahaka Mezcal is crafted by the Morales family in San Dionisio Ocotepec, in the highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico. This Zapotec family, has perfected the art of mezcal creation over five generations, and is a proud shareholder of Wahaka Mezcal. Using 100% organic, Espadín agave, Wahaka Mezcal offers an un-aged joven or blanco mezcal (Wahaka Mezcal Espadín Joven); and a reposado, it’s aged counterpart complete with the gusano worm, which has been traditionally used to add flavor to the spirit (Wahaka Mezcal Reposado con Gusano). Adding to its lineup, Wahaka Mezcal also offers Wahaka Mezcal Madre Cuishe and Wahaka Mezcal Tobalá, which are distilled from wild agave varieties found in the Oaxacan highlands and lowlands, respectively. Topping off the Wahaka Mezcal lineup is the Wahaka Mezcal Ensemble, a blend of the Espadín Joven (50%), Madre Cuishe (25%) and Tobalá (25%).

“The majority of mezcal brands available in the United States only use the Espadín, which is the most common, farmed agave; but this doesn’t fully represent the range of mezcales that have been in production for centuries. We’re one of the only distilleries that offers mezcal made not only from Espadín, but also from some of the wild agave varieties, which offer more complex flavors, and a real taste of where the agave naturally grows,” said Wahaka Mezcal co-founder, Alejandro Santa-Cruz.

Unlike its popular relative tequila, mezcal can be made from a variety of agave plants, and is indigenous to seven different states of Mexico, the most prominent being Oaxaca. The distillation process involves crushing the agave hearts using a traditional millstone, after roasting them in earthen pits – giving it its signature smoky, smooth flavor. Despite the years of history behind mezcal, the spirit is just now starting to gain popularity in the United States.

In addition to offering a variety of agaves in its product line, Wahaka Mezcal is also differentiating itself from other mezcal companies by incorporating the production process into the brand, and being one of the few fully-integrated mezcales in the market – from the agave fields all the way to the commercialization of the brand. “Unlike others who simply purchase mezcal from a 3rd party, Wahaka Mezcal is also proudly owned by the Morales family, a 5th generation Zapotec mezcalero family that produces this delicious elixir exclusively for Wahaka Mezcal,” Santa-Cruz adds.

Wahaka Mezcal is currently available at a variety of bars, restaurants and retailers in Austin, Texas – including, La Condesa, Finos, Contigo, Haddington’s, Peche, East Side Showroom, 400 Rabbits, and Iron Cactus. Outside of Texas, Wahaka Mezcal can also be found at select locations in Southern California, such as Los Angeles hotspot, Las Perlas and San Diego’s Cantina Mayahuel. The product is also available in several select locations throughout the U.S, including celebrity-chef Rick Bayless’, Frontera Grill in Chicago. In Mexico, it tops the list of mezcales at the renowned Café des Artistes in Puerto Vallarta where recently Chef Thierry announced Wahaka Mezcal as the “best mezcal in the world.” Chef Patricia Quintana’s iconic restaurant in the Districto Federal, Izote, also features Wahaka.

To compliment their debut, Wahaka Mezcal made a big splash in spirits competitions coast-to-coast, including: 5 Silver Medals at the New York International Spirits Competition, 2 Gold and 3 Silver medals at the Spirits of Mexico awards in San Diego, and 2 “Best of the Best” awards from Tequila.net.

The company plans on expanding distribution to several key markets in 2012, including Northern California, New York, Seattle, Chicago and the Washington D.C Metro Area. Moreover, Wahaka Mezcal will be competing in some high-profile spirits competitions including —the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in New York.

Vancouver, WA (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

TigerStop LLC®, the global leader in stop-gauge and linear positioning systems with locations in the United States and the Netherlands, announces the appointment of Spencer Dick to serve on the International Trade Administration’s Industry Trade Advisory Committee’s Automotive Equipment And Capital Goods (ITAC2). The committee is a “unique public-private partnership jointly managed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of United States Trade Representative that engages business leaders in formulating U.S. trade policy.”

The Committee advises the Secretary and the United States Trade Representative concerning trade matters and functions solely as an advisory committee providing detailed policy and technical advice, information, and recommendations to the Secretary and the USTR regarding trade barriers, negotiation of trade agreements, and implementation of existing trade agreements affecting its sectors; and performs such other advisory functions relevant to U.S. trade policy as may be requested by the Secretary and the USTR or their designees.

“Serving on this committee gives me the opportunity to be a small voice for something I hold vitally important to the future of the U.S. economy,” said Spencer Dick, CEO of TigerStop. “A significant portion of our current crisis related to job growth and real income growth finds its roots in the dollar being the reserve currency of the world economy. If you want to buy oil or pay for imports or have a currency that will be accepted in the international market, you have to earn U.S. dollars. The low cost goods we buy from countries such as China are solely connected to earning American dollars. Our trading partners have figured out that as long as they have the same or more dollars coming into their country than they are paying out, they are ahead of the game. They are taking U.S. dollars and U.S. jobs to strengthen their economy. Our trading partners have been allowed to cheat and Americans suffer as they try to earn a living.”

While Mr. Dick’s viewpoint is not representative of those of the ITAC2 committee, he is optimistic that his 30 years of manufacturing and trade experience will offer solutions on rectifying the unfair trade practices which have damaged the U.S. middle class.

Mr. Dick’s company, TigerStop, develops products which are the gold standard for linear positioning systems and are used by woodworking manufacturers, metal, steel, and fenestration workers, welders, contractors, cabinet makers and others. The systems attach to new or existing equipment and move the stop or push the material to an exact dimension for processing. They provide solutions that eliminate set-up time, inaccuracies, excessive re-work, poor productivity, and low yield. And, with computer numerical control (CNC) technology, the TigerStop positions material to +/- 0.004” (+/- 0.1mm) with the touch of a button. With repeatable accuracy of +/- 0.004” and the upgradeable optimizing and defecting software, TigerStop products provide lean solutions to thousands of manufacturers from the smallest shop to the largest factory. TigerStop products take minutes to learn and are easy to use.

Chatham, MA (PRWEB) February 13, 2012

Sixty years after the Coast Guard’s most daring Cape Cod rescue, commemorations in Massachusetts will honor Bernard C. Webber and the crew of the CG 36500 who saved more than 30 crewmen from the SS Pendleton.

At around the same time, a new Coast Guard cutter named after Webber will complete its first month of active service in Miami.

“Christening a cutter in Bernie’s name is a great honor, but almost certainly would have earned a wry smile from him,” said Robert R. Frump, author of “Two Tankers Down,” a best-selling book about the rescue of the crews of two stricken tankers, the Pendleton and the SS Fort Mercer.

“Bernie was devoted to small boat search and rescue and his version of Coast Guard often differed greatly from that of the blue water officers aboard the cutters,” Frump said.

At one point in the rescue sixty years ago, Webber was ordered to take a boatload of rescued crewmen to a Coast Guard cutter and to transfer them at sea. He had other orders conflicting with those and in a decisive moment, Webber simply turned off the radio and followed his own instincts.

He was told at one point after the rescue that he might face court martial because he ignored orders from the cutter’s officers. More senior officers prevailed and instead, he was given the Gold Lifesaving Medal.

Of the four men who saved 32 men from the Pendleton, only one survives. In a ceremony in Chatham on Saturday, Feb. 18, Andy Fitzgerald will be asked to ring a memorial bell for his late shipmates. Seamen Ervin Maske and Richard Livesey died in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Webber died in 2009.

Details of the commemoration are still being finalized, but an open house and awards ceremony is planned for Boston on Feb. 15 featuring Fitzgerald and Senior Chief Charles Bridges, the last living survivor of the Pendleton crew.

On Saturday, there will be an open house at Coast Guard Station Chatham from 1 to 5 p.m. and a visit to Chatham by the famous motor lifeboat, which is now a floating museum operated by the Orleans Historical Society.

On Feb. 18, 1952, two tankers foundered and broke up in high winds and heavy surf off Cape Cod. Coast Guard cutters played an active role in rescuing the crew of the SS Fort Mercer, but in the end there, a small boat brought the last of the crew to safety. This rescue, nearly as dramatic as the Webber rescue, also resulted in a Gold Medal for William R. Kiely Jr. who launched a small surf boat from the cutter Yakutat and made multiple rescue runs to pick up officers trapped on the bobbing bow of the Fort Mercer.

The $ 88 million, 154-foot CGC Bernard C. Webber cruised into Miami last Thursday morning, the first of a new generation of patrol boat designed to patrol the Straits of Florida, save troubled boaters and pursue illegal traffickers and migrants.

“It’s so advanced, it’s exciting. It’s going to give us an advantage over the bad guys,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Leonardo Aspuru told reporters.

Formally called a Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter, it’s equipped with a state-of-the-art pilot house, featuring an array of computer screens that show the bridge what other boats and aircraft are in the area.

It’s equipped for both search-and-rescue and law enforcement missions. There’s a remote-operated gyro-stabilized 25mm gun mounted near the bow that lets the crew direct fire from inside the pilot house rather than posting a gunner on deck.

And it has a 26-foot chase boat that’s launched from the stern, rather than dropped over the side, to go “fast enough to chase down smugglers — 40 to 50 miles an hour — and stop them,” said Rear Adm. William Baumgartner, the commander of the Coast Guard’s Seventh District stretching from South Carolina to the Caribbean.

By contrast, Webber’s small craft had no radar and only a 90 horsepower engine to propel itself through mountainous seas. The crew shot the Chatham Bar at storm surge — a feat thought previously impossible. Then, with shards of the windshield imbedded in his face, Webber somehow found the Pendleton, loaded most of the crew aboard and brought them safely to Chatham.

Shortly after the rescue, Webber was warned that he might be court martialed for disobeying orders when he turned off the radio and ignored the orders of officers onboard the cutters. The Coast Guard made an abrupt change in posture, however, and offered Webber the Gold Lifesaving Medal and his crew the Silver Medal.

Webber told them he would refuse to accept the Gold unless his entire crew received it and the Coast Guard acquiesced.

“Bernie Webber’s courage continued far, far after the rescue,” author Frump said. “He was a man who was loyal first and foremost to his duty and his small boat colleagues and he passed up many opportunities to capitalize on his fame, choosing instead to honor that duty and the small boat service.”

Frump’s account of the rescue includes previously untold episodes from the standpoint of the crews of the Fort Mercer and the Pendleton, uncovered through searches of archives and hearing records. Webber cooperated closely with the author’s efforts — though he was always skeptical and critical of any account of the rescue.

For the past thirty years, Robert R. Frump has written about maritime affairs, first for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and later as an author of books and magazine articles. He was managing editor of The Journal of Commerce, America’s foremost maritime newspaper, and also wrote “Until the Sea Shall Free Them,” an account of the wreck of the SS Marine Electric and reforms the tragedy brought to the US Maritime system.

With Timothy Dwyer, he was awarded the George Polk Award for his reporting on the Marine Electric. He also received the Gerald Loeb Award for national business reporting for articles about Philadelphia ports. He was a member of a Philadelphia Inquirer task force that received the Pulitzer Prize.

A collection of his maritime writing is available on Kindle under the title, “I Cover the Waterfront.” he also has written extensively about African wildlife and animal-human conflict in “The Man-eaters of Eden” and “The Magical Man-eaters of Tanzania,” both available on Kindle.

Irvine, California (PRWEB) January 15, 2012

O’Neil Software, who recently celebrated their 30 year anniversary, continues to count the many countries whose business they’ve earned…81, which includes their latest addition – Williams & Gosling Ltd., based in Suva Fiji Islands.

Williams & Gosling Ltd. (W&G), who recently celebrated their 75th anniversary, offers a full range of Integrated Logistics Services: Imports and Exports by Sea and Air; Haulage Operators; Shipping Agency/Document Storage and Household Removals. The company has been providing customers Document Storage Services for the past 9 years and currently has 7500 cartons in store for 11 clients.

The formation of W&G goes back to the mid 1920s. During this time, Captain Williams & Captain Gosling, who were involved in pilotage services for the vessels entering the Fiji group, got together and decided to form a partnership in Suva. This partnership was incorporated in October 1936 as a private limited liability company, predominately engaged in stevedoring and pilotage services.

Since then the company has grown, diversified and established itself at the leading edge of freight forwarding technology. W&G is a part of an international network of cooperating agents involved in Freight Forwarding, Household and Office Removals, Local and International Courier, etc.

With offices in Suva, Lautoka, BA and at Nadi International Airport, the company is manned by over 300 staff members, who together have a jealously guarded reputation for quality, services and trust.

Why W&G Chose O’Neil Software Over the Competition

W&G had always done its own Document Storage and decided to extend these services to certain clients, utilizing existing warehouses not specifically designed for this function. While they filled them with racking, they were low in height and soon became full, not enabling the company to expand and promote these services to other clients. Additionally, turnover time for retrievals recorded manually, was not efficient, especially when records were brought back from clients and someone else would place them in a different location.

With those challenges in mind, W&G recently purchased a 12-acre site, where they are building a fully integrated logistics depot, with a complex of 9m high tilt slab warehouses. This will enable them to migrate from offering their clients a basic Document Storage Service to a fully fledged one, as well as promote these new services to larger corporate clients. And because software scalability would be an important factor because they expected the number of their users to increase over time, they were looking for a system that would automatically scale to meet their needs.

“While doing our research, we visited a number of Document Management sites in New Zealand, as well as Australia. We were impressed with the demos given using O’Neil’s software,” notes Dave Aidney, Managing Director for W&G. “Further investigation suggested that O’Neil was the market leader in Records Management software. Since we were a market leader as well in our industry, we liked being associated with those who have similar principles in their industry. And we especially liked the fact that O’Neil continually updates their software, so we could plan on using it indefinitely,” Dave points out.

“Fiji isn’t a large place and quite often overseas companies are not that particularly interested in offering services where the market size is seen to be small,” notes David Ramsay, New Accounts Sales Manager for O’Neil Australasia Pty., Ltd. “When W&G expressed a keen interest in our software, we took the time out to visit them. We were extremely impressed with their facilities, the opportunities that were available in this emerging industry and what they were trying to accomplish.”

David Ramsay continues: “Having experienced all that first-hand, we strongly felt that our records management software was a great fit for W&G. We could see how it could be used as sort of a navigational screen of sorts, to determine where W&G’s business was heading. And we were more than happy to have them draw on our industry expertise, knowledge and first-class research, to continue to take them where they wanted to go with their business.”

Other Benefits W&G Reaped From O’Neil’s Software

When asked about other benefits/functionality W&G gained from using O’Neil’s software, Dave Aidney responds: “The proper labeling of locations and cartons in particular, with barcodes for faster retrieval and an efficient locating system. This enables quick turnover and the precise recording of item movements, no matter who is doing it. We can also scan on demand and because the software is user-friendly and multi-functional, it offers our users and clients a host of business services and reports, depending on their needs.”

(PRWEB) February 07, 2012

The first orientation training event for 10,000 London 2012 Games Maker volunteers and Games time employees took place at Wembley Arena in London. The event was the first of six national orientation events on 4th, 5th and 18th February which will form the biggest London 2012 events outside of the Games this year.

Around 10,000 people attend first of six orientation training events for Games Makers and employees at Wembley Arena
Orientation sessions to take place in London in February and across the UK in March
Images from the event available to download here

The events are the first stage in the training programme for London 2012 employees and up to 70,000 ‘Games Makers’, the volunteers who will to help make the Games a success. Around 70% of the trainees at each session will be volunteers.

The Orientation Training events provide an introduction to the heritage and importance of the Games as well as an insight into what working at London 2012 will be like, including the sports, venues and the roles. Games Makers will leave the session prepared for the next steps on the journey to Games time. The sessions include welcome talks from hosts, presentations and mocked up scenarios which will introduce all Games time workers to the realities of putting on an event the size of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Six smaller regional orientation sessions will be held in March for Games Makers who have been offered roles at venues outside of London in Weymouth and Portland, Cardiff, Coventry, Newcastle, Manchester and Glasgow. Invites for these have started to be sent out.

By the time the Games Makers reach Games Time, collectively they will have undertaken 1.2 million hours of training. Around 8 million volunteer hours across the summer of 2012 will be used.

Games Makers will also receive role-specific training from February onwards where they will learn all they need to know to carry out their role successfully and also have the opportunity to try out the duties they’ll be doing at Games time. They will then receive venue-specific training in June which will familiarise volunteers with their venue. Team leaders will also receive event leadership training.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: “Today marks a significant milestone in our preparation for the Games. These orientation events are the start of our extensive training programme which will deliver over 1 million training hours for up to 70,000 people from around the country. Our Games Makers will contribute a total of around 8 million volunteer hours during the Games and simply wouldn’t happen without them. I hope that the orientation training they receive has made them even more excited about being part of the London 2012 team this summer.”

The orientation events are the first time Games Makers will be together following the selection events and the first time they will have the opportunity to meet the wider work force. The sessions will be attended by London 2012 volunteers, paid LOCOG staff and contractors.

2,000 young people will be taking up volunteer roles during the London 2012 Games, as part of the Young Games Maker programme. Approximately 250 teams of young people will join the adult Games Makers this summer to help stage the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Their training will take a similar format over the coming months.

Worldwide Olympic Partner McDonald’s is the Presenting Partner of the Games Maker volunteer programme. McDonald’s has used its nationwide presence to help attract candidates for the diverse team that will be needed to make the London 2012 Games a success. The LOCOG Volunteer team held training sessions for many of the volunteers conducting interviews at the world-class training facilities at McDonald’s head office in East Finchley, London and the restaurant chain will also be helping to facilitate the training of the volunteers in the run up to Games time.

Jez Langhorn, Vice President, People, McDonald’s UK, said: “With the first orientation event getting underway it feels like the Games are nearly here. We’ve been hard at work to help plan and design the training materials that will prepare the volunteers for the challenge ahead, drawing on our experience in delivering great customer service and award-winning training programmes on a large scale.

“As the Games Makers prepare for their role this summer, McDonald’s will to be on hand to support them every step of the way. It’s an exciting time to be part of the hospitality sector as we prepare to put the country on show to millions of visitors this summer and I’m proud of the role we will have played in making sure our volunteers are ready.”

Almost a quarter of a million people applied to the Games Maker programme in 2010 and a team of specially trained volunteer interviewers has been carrying out selection interviews since February 2011. Up to 100,000 interviews will have been conducted over the course of the programme and of these; 76,000 interviews have taken place to date in nine selection centres around the UK. Interviews will continue in London’s selection centre at ExCeL through to the end of March 2012.

So far 55,000 offers have been made for roles at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Offers are continuing to be made, with the final role expected to be filled at the end of April.

Cadbury is an Official Supporter of the London 2012 Games Maker programme and will help LOCOG build great Games Maker teams through fun and friendly game play delivered by programmes such as the Spots v Stripes campaign.

For further information please contact the London 2012 Press Office

Amongst the people attending the orientation training are:

Elizabeth (Betty) Ragget, 74, Hove, Brighton, Retired

Elizabeth is a retired news-agent and now works part-time stewarding in a theatre. During Games Time she has been assigned a role based at the International Federation Office at the Excel Centre, where she will be involved in Boccia. Elizabeth belongs to a service club and does a lot of fundraising. She has two daughters, one of which is the Boccia competition manager at the Paralympic games. Her daughter formally taught sport to disabled children which is one of the reasons Elizabeth decided to apply to be a volunteer. Elizabeth says: ‘I can’t wait for games-time; it’s a fantastic opportunity to show the rest of the world what Britain can do. I’ve applied so I can do something worthwhile and be part of it all’. Elizabeth’s granddaughter has also applied to be a volunteer which means three generations within her family will be working and volunteering at London 2012.

Beryl Stratton, 73, Chingford, retired

Beryl is a mother of three and a grandmother of four and has dedicated 50 years of her life to volunteering. During Games Time, she will be volunteering as an athletics services team member in the Olympic Stadium. Her husband, 75, and son will also be volunteering, as a Games Maker and London Ambassador respectively. The Strattons, married for 48 years, have been volunteering together at athletics meets and have also been to the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics together. Beryl’s husband is the reason she first became interested in athletics 40 years ago and she was inspired to become a Games Maker when she saw an 80 year old female volunteer at the Sydney Games. Beryl is honoured to be involved in the volunteering and delighted to be able to share this opportunity with her husband.

Joe Mason, 18, Sawtry, Cambrideshire , Student

Joe is currently in his first year at Leeds University studying broadcast journalism. During Games Time he has been assigned a role for badminton within the sports equipment team at Wembley arena and Redbridge badminton training centre. He is a keen player and first volunteered at his local badminton club for his Duke of Edinburgh bronze award when he was 14. He has since found a taste for volunteering and for the last two years has been a volunteer at national badminton indoor events and undertaken his badminton umpiring course. Joe is overwhelmed that he has the chance to be part of the Olympic Games and is enthusiastic to see his badminton volunteering progress.

Sarah Gifford, 26, East Dulwich, London, Volunteer Manager at Queen Mary University

Sarah is a volunteer’s manager at Queen Mary University in London and a few people in her team have also applied to be volunteers at London 2012. During Games Time Sarah will be volunteering at the cycling and athletics events along with a few of her colleagues who have also been selected. Sarah is really happy with her role as she has volunteered previously at a few of the London Marathons. As soon as Sarah heard volunteers were being recruited for the games she knew straight away she wanted to be a part of it with her background in the volunteering sector as well as being part of such a spectacular event.

Phil Cobb, 59, Loughborough, Contracts Manager for Charnwood Council

Phil has been assigned a role for the volleyball events. He’s ecstatic at being offered a role related to his favourite sport. Phil has been playing volleyball since his student days at Loughborough university and continued to play in the lower national leagues. Phil now coaches and referees volleyball games around the country and plays when he can. He has two children. His daughter’s boyfriend has also applied to be a volunteer.

Cassim Patel, 30, Preston, Portfolio Manager

Cassim works in banking as a portfolio manager. He grew up in Preston and ever since Great Britain won the bid for the Games in 2005 he has wanted to be involved. He has volunteer experience with local charities, supporting disabled people and Macmillan cancer patients. Helping comes naturally to Cassim as he cared for his disabled father from the age of 14. Cassim has been allocated a role as a EVS Mobility Team Member, OPK Common Domain.

Kevin O’Malley, 50, Halifax, West Yorks, Resource Manager

Kevin, a father of two, will be volunteering at Earl’s Court for Volleyball, in the sports equipment team during the Games. Volleyball has been a passion for Kevin since he first played at school aged 14 and he set up his own first league team soon after leaving school at 16. Kevin has played in local and all four divisions of the volleyball National League, during which time he was also qualified as a coach and referee. He now concentrates on coaching the Yorkshire U15 boys and the North England U18 boys and is one of the founding members and chair of a National League club in Division 1. Kevin’s enthusiasm for the sport has rubbed off on his son Kieran O’Malley (23) who is pro volleyball player in Holland and a GB Volleyball squad member with 73 caps for England. Kevin never thought he would have the opportunity to experience an Olympics and can’t wait to actually be a part of the Games.

Sarah Pocklington, 44, nr Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, British Red Cross

Sarah will be a team leader working at London Heathrow meeting and greeting dignitaries, athletes and VIPs during the Games. Sarah’s passion for sport originally spurred from playing Ultimate Frisbee but she found a love of volunteering in the sport rather than playing, finding that she enjoyed helping and supporting the team. Sarah has been involved in the Olympics volunteering process right from the beginning as she trained Selection Event Volunteers at Weymouth and Coventry centres and was a Selection Event Volunteer at London Excel. Sarah’s brother-in-law, who inspired her to sign up, is also volunteering at the Games.

Ellie (Eleanor) Cox, 25, Wimbledon, London, works in the Finance sector in London

Ellie is very excited about games. She was an athlete at European level playing Badminton between the ages of 11-20. She knows many of the Badminton players after playing for England and regularly visits the national badminton centre. She’s a big fan of London and loves the huge energetic feel to large scale community events. She believes the games will re-generate and improve the local areas. She thinks an emotional uplift is what the city needs and believes the games will be a much needed boost for 2012. Ellie is a big fan of sport, she cycles to work, runs a lot and plays squash. She lives alone and is a true Londoner, born and bred in Wimbledon. Ellie would rather not talk about her work although she does work in finance in the City of London and enjoys a lovely social life.

Cathal Cunning, 47, Portstewart, Northern Ireland, Chef

Cathal, born and bred in Portstewart, will be volunteering as a member of the transport team in the Olympics Village during the Games. He first got involved in volunteering at 19 when he started marshalling at the Coleraine District Motor Club and has been Chief Marshal there for the last seven years. The North West 200, Ireland’s largest outdoor sporting event, runs through Cathal’s hometown and it is for this reason his whole family have been involved in motorsports volunteering. Cathal has found that volunteering brings family and friends together and he is eager to get involved with the once in a lifetime opportunity of volunteering at the Games.

Gordon Neale OBE, 67, Newcastle (Whitley Bay), retired

Gordon has worked in Disability sport his whole life. He coached Great Britain’s first ever Sitting Volleyball team in the 1980s and 1990s and currently holds a number of voluntary positions within Disability Volleyball including, GB Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team Manager and Director for sitting volleyball for Volleyball England. Gordon received his OBE in 2002 for contribution to disability sport and it is due to Gordon’s extensive background that he will be Sitting Volleyball liaison with the international Volleyball federation at the Excel centre during the Games. Gordon is honoured to be part of the team of staff preparing and supporting Great Britain’s first ever Sitting Women’s team for London 2012.

He was working at Eastway leisure centre, now on the site of Olympics, after being in the army for 26 years and started coaching volleyball. It was when he liaised with disability organisation Les Autres that he started to build up sitting volleyball as a sport.

Carol Gordon, 50, Lecturer, Whitton, South West London

Carol is a Sports Lecturer at Richmond Upon Thames College and has will take up the role of Athlete Services Team Leader during Games Time, where she will liaise with the athletes as they arrive at the arena and ensure team liaisons are in touch with their teams. Carol has been teaching her students about the Olympics for over 25 years, she believes sport connects people from all around the world and that it overrides all the discriminations including race, age and gender. She has been the international head coach of the England cadet boys volleyball team since 1996. She believes that England was the founder of competitive sports in the 1880s and having the Games in London in 2012 will mean we all have to put our best foot forward and make England proud. Her colleagues at the national league club have volunteered too and many have been appointed official jobs relating to volleyball. Carol is a very passionate advocate of sport and is thrilled to be part of the games.
